World Faces an Eye Health Worker Shortage Crisis

On the recent World Sight Day, the organization called Sightsavers believes that there are not enough eye health workers in the world.

In the United Kingdom, The College of Emergency did a study and found that there were not eye health staff in emergency departments.

The United Kingdom is not the only country that is having problem with a shortage of eye health workers. Sightsavers says that there are over 50 countries that do not have the right number of eye health workers. If you combine eye health workers with doctors, nurses and midwives, there is a shortage of 4.3 million health workers.

This international shortage problem is not the same every country or region. In Africa, the health worker shortage has reached crisis levels in 26 countries. An additional 10,000 eye health workers are needed in these countries. Internationally, according to Sightsavers, these eye health worker shortages mean that many countries are not meeting their Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). If things continue like this, governments will not be able to implement strategies that will increase the number of eye health workers.

Sighsavers feels that eye health workers can’t find the solution to this problem alone. They must get financial help from the global donor community and the national governments. They must know how to invest the money wisely. If they don’t know where to put the money, their investment could be wasted.

The lack of eye health shortage affects the important health services. If a country has less than 23 doctors, midwives and nurses per 10,000 people, they usually don’t get adequate coverage rates to reach the targets set by the MDGs. In Ghana, they now have 1 doctor and 10 nurses and midwives per 10,000 people. UK quite adequately more covered with 27 doctors and 94 nurses and midwives per 10,000 people. Sightsavers feels that the world faces an eye health doctor shortage crisis and that governments or communities must solve this problem.

The Contribution of Michael Lacey in the Realm of Mathematics

What would the world be without science? It’s a question Michael Lacey may have asked himself before he became the mathematician he is today. Lacey may have known a world free of mathematics is a void space. His famous scientific publications indicate he had the heart for science especially mathematics. He is among the few honored, celebrated, acclaimed, renowned, and distinguished mathematicians you would meet today. Any trial to summarize Lacey’s abilities and qualities would make you run short of descriptive adjectives. He didn’t pursue mathematics because it was the only available opportunity but because it was his childhood passion.

Lacey was born on September 26th, 1959. He went to Texas University, Austin for his undergraduate degree in Mathematics. As a passionate and avid mathematician, Lacey didn’t end his studies when he got his first degree. He pursued his career at the Illinois University and graduated with a Ph.D. in Mathematics in 1987. Mathematics has different fields one would specialize in based on their interests. Since Michael Lacey wanted to discover a profound solution in logarithmic and probability equations, he did a thesis in Banach spaces. Lacey’s thesis solved most of the Logarithm problems many students had struggled with in the past.

Taking a career in Mathematics would require one to be devoted to the course. The love Lacey had for mathematics is indescribable. His attitude to the discipline of mathematics is positive, and this has helped him to add unmatched content to this discipline. He has mentored many students who showed unquestionable passion and interest in mathematics in most of the institutions he has worked in so far. He has offered selfless and quality services to different universities such as North Carolina University, Louisiana State University, and also Indiana University. He has been a lecturer at the Georgia Institute of Technology since 1996. He has been an associate chair of this faculty and a senior professor in this institution.

While he was at the North Carolina University, he had to prove a concept. He did so by contributing a lot to the Central Limit Theorem. Sparse Bounds for Bochner is one of the many scientific journals Michael Lacey has published. His immense contribution to the world of mathematics has seen him receive prestigious awards such as Guggenheim Fellowship Award, Salem Prize, and postdoctoral fellowship of Science Education.

China Feeling Pressure says Kamil Idris

Theft of intellectual property rights is a massive problem on a global scale. China is the number one offender of these rights. President Trump has made it clear “Enough is enough”

There is no one in the world today that knows more about the importance of IP rights than Professor Kamil Idris. Serving as the Director General for the World Intellectual Property Organization, Professor Idris has championed these fundamental rights.

For decades, China has reaped the benefits of illegally copied goods and services. Manufacturing and selling these goods at a fraction of the cost, driving companies out of business.

Trump has levied significant tariffs on China in recent months, backing off slightly in the last few weeks. Trump wants to see China enforce their own IP rights, scholars believe this strategy may backfire.

China must feel economic pressure before it considers any reforms, says Scott Kennedy from the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Kennedy sees President Trump as fighting tough, not smart.

Neither China nor the United States wants a trade war believes China expert, Orville Schell. The tariffs have left China off guard; however, there is more President Trump can do to stem intellectual property theft.

Few people realize the importance of intellectual property in their daily lives. Many ask, what do these rights bring to my life? Without IP rights, new technologies would never be developed. Intellectual property rights allow broadcasting of worldwide events and global warming would take on new meaning.

Experts believe the issue of IP rights is slowly being resolved. There could be a few reasons for this. The previous administration was already deep into bilateral talks to resolve IP rights with the Chinese government. The effort swept aside, along with the last political climate. An obvious reason for the improvement of IP rights between the US and China might just be the improvement of China’s manufacturing facilities.

Andy Rothman of the investment firm Matthews Asia believes China is being forced into better manufacturing. Rothman also concedes, as Chinese manufacturing has become more efficient and profitable, those companies want to protect their own IP rights. A rise in lawsuits has alerted the Chinese government.

Professor Idris is passionate when it comes to protecting a person’s creativity. China’s stubbornness is evident in intellectual property rights, President Trump continues to press the issues. There is light at the end of the tunnel.
